Description: The Vanderveer mill was built between 1801 and 1804 by John C. Vanderveer. During the 1863 New York Draft Riots, Flatbush's African American community took refuge in the building, fearing that the violence across the river would spill into Kings County. According to historian Gertrude Lefferts Vanderbilt, the mill burned down on March 4, 1879.
