Description:
This indenture transferred Mercy, a seven-year old African American girl, from the household of Phebe Lefferts to that of Abraham Vanderveer. Mercy was subject to New York State's gradual manumission law, which guaranteed that all African American children born to enslaved mothers after July 4, 1799 would be freed on their twenty-fifth birthday if female, twenty-eighth birthday if male.
